State Capitol Building

State Capitol - 450 pixels

The Wisconsin State Capitol lies on an isthmus bordered by Lake Mendota to the west and Lake Monona to the east. The building sits diagonally in the center of the 13.5 acres square park, each of its four wings extending toward the cardinal points of the compass and the corners of the park. It is constructed of steel beam and clay tile. The exterior of the building is White Bethel Granite from Vermont. The Capitol stands 284' 5" tall. The granite dome is the only one in the United States and is the fourth largest by volume in the world. Atop the dome is Daniel Chester French's 23-1/2 caret gold-gilded bronze statue, "Wisconsin" which is 15' 5" high and weighs over 3 tons. This majestic granite structure is the third Capitol building to stand on this site. The first Capitol stood for twenty-five years (1838 - 1863). It was replaced by a larger building that was badly damaged by fire in February of 1904. The present building, designed in the beaux-arts style of architecture by George B. Post & Sons, was built between 1906 and 1917 at a cost of $7.25 million.

The State Capitol has 448,297 square feet with the highlights of the building being 6 decorative chambers: Governor's Conference Room, Supreme Court Hearing Room, Assembly Chamber and Parlor, Senate Chamber and Parlor, North Hearing Room and GAR Memorial Hearing Room plus the rotunda. The interior has forty-three varieties of stone from around the world, decorative murals, glass mosaics, and hand-carved furniture.
