Investigate Court Services/Assistance

The Capitol Police have a specialized Investigative Court Services Unit, which conducts hundreds of complicated police investigations and processes over a thousand court cases annually. This unit conducts complex criminal investigations and is highly skilled in the use of sophisticated surveillance and alarm devices used to detect criminal activity. The Investigative Unit is required to be knowledgeable of current electronic devices used in criminal investigations or the gathering of criminal intelligence and of devices used in the illicit surveillance of dignitaries. The Investigative Unit also provides support, follow-up and criminal case completion services. This results in increased specialized capabilities, flexibility, case accountability and promotes a cooperative effort and exchange of information within the agency. Officers assigned to this Unit have special expertise in investigative techniques and can rapidly respond to any crime that occurs within Capitol Police jurisdiction.

While the primary mission of the Investigative/Court Services Unit is to investigate complicated criminal activity occurring on state properties, other responsibilities include:

  1. Liaison Relationship with Other Dane County Law Enforcement Agencies.
Officers in the Investigative Unit serve in a liaison capacity to the Dane County Court and District Attorney's Office. This relationship facilitates the dissemination of information between the Capitol Police and other Dane County law enforcement agencies.

  2. Court Services.
Capitol Police Officers assigned to this unit represent the State at initial court appearances of individuals summoned for criminal and traffic violations. This unit is also responsible to advise the Department of changes related to court and/or enforcement procedures, as well as, any statutory changes.

  3. Management of Evidence and Confiscated Properties.
Property responsibilities include the receipt, transfer, storage, retrieval and release of impounded, abandoned, unclaimed, recovered stolen property, as well as, for property, materials and substances held as evidence in criminal investigations. The policies and procedures regulating the handling of property are established to ensure that the property is maintained pursuant to judicial requirements.

  4. Crime Prevention and Detection Programs.
The Investigative Unit is responsible for agency crime prevention and detection programs to increase public awareness and education, in addition to, conducting security oriented site surveys.
