What You Should Do If You Find Suspicious Substances in a Letter or Package

The Capitol Police Department advises all state employees who come in contact with letters or packages that contain suspicious substances to take the following steps:

Remain calm. Do not panic.

Put the letter down and leave it undisturbed.

Inform others in the area that you have a suspicious substance.

Call Capitol Police 266-7161

Wash your hands thoroughly and then wash your face thoroughly.

Wait for the police to arrive and follow their instructions.

All other people in the area should refrain from touching the object, but should wait for the police to arrive to give additional instructions.
