Mission

The Worker's Compensation Section in the Bureau of State Risk Management (BSRM) provides for administration of worker's compensation benefits for injured state employees. The Worker's Compensation Act designates the Department of Administration as responsible for "the timely delivery of benefits...to employees of the state and their dependents and other functions of the state as an employer..."

BSRM's administrative responsibilities include development of policies and program design. The objectives of these policies and programs are to:

• deliver timely benefits to injured employees
• determine eligibility for benefits
• manage claims to assist employees in obtaining the best quality medical treatment and effectively returning to work
• implement program activities which will control and save costs
• assure program integrity by applying modern claims management principles and practices

The Worker's Compensation Program covers 70,000 state and university employees. BSRM delegates claims management functions to the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the University of Wisconsin System Administration (UWS), while directly managing claims for all other state agencies. The Department of Justice represents the State in disputed claims coming before Administrative Law Judges and on appeal.
