The State of Wisconsin continues to be recognized nationally for its high standards of regulations that protect the health and welfare of racing greyhounds and promotes the integrity of pari-mutuel wagering and the greyhound racing industry.

Additional pari-mutuel related regulatory related responsibilities include animal drug testing for prohibited substances, issuance of occupational licenses of all participants, revenue and tax monitoring of collections from the monies wagered at the racetrack, administrative and statutory rule enforcement and the oversight of the humane treatment of the racing animals including the administration of the "Adopt-a-Greyhound" program.

History
Beginning in 1989, the Wisconsin Racing Board, a predecessor agency to the Division of Gaming, issued licenses for the ownership and management of five greyhound tracks to conduct pari-mutuel racing and wagering. During 1990-1991 five of the racetracks commenced operations: Wisconsin Dells Greyhound Park in Lake Delton, Geneva Lakes Greyhound Track in Delavan, Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha, St. Croix Meadows in Hudson, and Fox Valley Greyhound Racing Park in Kaukauna.

Since the initial openings, four of the facilities have ceased operations: Fox Valley Greyhound Park in August of 1993, Wisconsin Dells Greyhound Park in September of 1996, St. Croix Meadows in August 2001 and Geneva Lakes Greyhound Track in April 2006.
